Fruity, nutty and caramel-y, these chocolate-free desserts prove that you don't need cocoa to satisfy your sweet tooth.

When my partner and I figured out that chocolate is a huge migraine trigger for him, he was pretty sad once reality sank in: no more chocolate desserts. I immediately tried to think of desserts without chocolate he could still eat, “Brownies…no. Oh, tiramisu! Wait, no. Chocolate chip cookies…without the chocolate chips?” I’m a professionally trained baker; why was this so hard?

But once I started thinking about all our favorite dessert recipes, it felt like every fruity, nutty, creamy, buttery and cinnamon-y dessert hit me at once. Then, there was a novel’s worth of chocolate-free dessert ideas in my head: warm fruit crisps, puckering lemon bars, tons of cheesecake recipes, citrusy cakes with plenty of decadent frosting, pretty much every pie I’ve ever baked and all the classic and modern cinnamon roll recipes we love on weekends (carrot cake cinnamon rolls are so good).

Even the adventurous eater can enjoy international favorites, like pastel de nata, gorgeously purple ube desserts and all the non-chocolate tiramisu variations, like matcha, Earl Grey or limoncello. There are lots of easy and no-bake desserts here, so you can still make desserts without chocolate even if you’re oven-averse. Many of these recipes are adaptable for vegan, dairy-free or gluten-free eaters (I’d know; we’re also a gluten-free home!), so there’s a little something for everybody. Chocolate, who?
