There are certain food items I consider to be so classic that you can’t actually improve upon them. They have certified “GOAT” status that they’ve held for years, or even decades. I’m talking about things like the McDonald’s Sausage McMuffin, Double Stuf Oreos and Diet Coke. I would have included Nutella in that list, except the brand just released a new version that has me rethinking everything—in a good way.

I’m pleased to introduce you to Nutella Peanut. Gasp! I know, something so simple yet so good.

Chocolate and peanut butter is a tried-and-true combination, so I was happy to see Nutella incorporate them both in this new spread—without neglecting that iconic Nutella hazelnut flavor, of course. It’s Nutella’s first new flavor in more than 60 years and if you ask me, it was worth waiting for. The trio of chocolate, hazelnut and peanut butter creates a balanced, delicious new spread that doesn’t taste quite like anything else on the market. Since Nutella managed to miraculously improve upon an already-perfect grocery store product, I am giving it our coveted Taste of Home Award.

Nutella Peanut

I’m Obsessed with Nutella, but I Love Nutella Peanut Even More

I’m a bit of a Nutella fiend. I studied abroad in France, where Nutella is very popular, and I would get a crepe with Nutella and bananas any chance I could. (Nutella is made by Italian company Ferrero, and it’s huge in Europe.) There is nothing quite as tasty as a hot-off-the-griddle crepe smothered with the chocolate-hazelnut spread and layered with sliced ripe bananas.

But unfortunately, now that I’m creeping towards 40, I have a lower tolerance for sweet foods. Trust me, it’s not a place I thought I would ever be. I used to eat hot cocoa mix out of the packet with a spoon as a kid. But now my palate has shifted, and I’ve become more critical of the sweets I enjoy. Plain Nutella is obviously still very good, but, to me, the new Nutella Peanut is just dreamy.

It has the hazelnut and cocoa flavors of the OG flavor we all love, with the addition of roasted peanut. I find that the nutty, salty peanut flavor lingers on the back end and tones down the sweetness of the spread.

I Use Nutella Peanut Spread for More than Toast

Nutella on toast wasn’t something I’d typically eat for breakfast, but now it’s become my new favorite treat. My go-to loaf of bread is the Simply Nature Graintastic Bread from Aldi (particularly the thin-sliced one), and it tastes excellent with a thin coating of Nutella Peanut. I’ve also heated up the spread and drizzled it over ice cream.

The peanut version of Nutella is slightly thinner and runnier than the classic, so I’ve actually had better luck dipping apple slices and cookies in it without them breaking, rather than having to grab a spoon and spread it over them.

Last Christmas, my mom made thumbprint cookies for our cookie exchange, and I convinced her to make a few thumbprints with Nutella instead of jam. She was a bit skeptical, but those cookies disappeared before we could pass them out to our neighbors. I am even more excited to make the thumbprints with Nutella Peanut this year.

In general, adding peanut butter flavor to something is probably always going to be a win. In fact, this is the one thing missing from Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream. Although then perhaps that ice cream flavor would become too powerful, so I’ll supplement it myself by dolloping Nutella Peanut on top.

And here’s a bonus for anyone who is vegan or dairy-free: This Nutella variety does not contain milk! There is a chance of cross-contamination—as indicated on the label—but it only lists peanuts, tree nuts and soy as allergens. This is an exciting development for many vegans I know, since the OG Nutella contains skim milk.

Where to Buy Nutella Peanut

Nutella Peanut is a brand-new product that debuted in April and is still rolling out in grocery stores and other retailers nationwide. According to Aldi’s website, it will be available in Aldi stores beginning April 22. You should also be able to order it on Amazon for delivery straight to your door. Otherwise, keep an eye out wherever you buy Nutella to see if its cool cousin shows up on shelves. Trust me, it’s worth the wait!
