I'm really loving it!

There are many elusive fast-food items that pop up on menus every once in a while. Taco Bell finally made the Mexican pizza a permanent item and KFC brought back potato wedges after a multi-year hiatus. McDonald’s trots out the McRib and Shamrock Shakes seasonally so they can maintain their aura of mystery and die-hard fan base.

But dare I say that McDonald’s has an even more mysterious item? Something that hasn’t been available to order for thirty years is making a big return this summer, and I have all the details. We’re celebrating America’s 250th anniversary this year, and one thing might be the most patriotic dessert in the country.

What is the mystery menu item?

McDonald’s is bringing back the Fried Apple Pie. I know! This is a move that even I didn’t see coming, and I follow McDonald’s menu drops like it’s my job (mostly because it is my job).

For the uninitiated, the Fried Apple Pie is a deep-fried version of the chain’s famous Apple Pie. It has a crispy, bubbly exterior crust that perfectly complements the gooey apple cinnamon filling inside. What I find the most interesting about the Fried Apple Pie, however, is its backstory.

The recipe was developed in the 1960s. A McDonald’s franchise owner in Tennessee, Litton Cochran, wanted to put something special on the menu. His wife, Jo, spent months perfecting the recipe for what became the now-famous Fried Apple Pie. The pie was a smash success and became a regional favorite before expanding to be available at McDonald’s locations nationwide. But in the early ’90s, it was discontinued and wiped off menus everywhere.

So if you’ve had a hankering for a Fried Apple Pie for the last thirty years, this is wonderful news!

How long will the Fried Apple Pie be available?

The Fried Apple Pie will be back on the menu at participating McDonald’s locations nationwide beginning on June 23. And it will be available all day, so you can grab one for breakfast if you feel like it. I have to admit, it sounds like it would go great with coffee. Good things come to those who wait, but you don’t want to wait too long. This will likely only be around for a few weeks, so enjoy it while you can.
