Wonton Mozzarella Sticks
All you have to do to make these crispy wonton mozzarella sticks is roll then fry.
These wonton mozzarella sticks are so easy to make, it’ll almost feel as if you’ve come up with a life hack. By using premade egg roll wrappers and sticks of good-quality string cheese, forming these tasty tubes is mere child’s play.
That said, frying the mozzarella sticks with wonton wrappers in hot oil is not as child-friendly. But once finished, kids and adults alike will delight in these wonton-wrapped mozzarella sticks. Serve them with a variety of sauces as an appetizer at parties or as a snack while you watch the game.
Ingredients for Wonton Mozzarella Sticks
- String cheese: Remove the plastic casing from 12 of your favorite mozzarella string cheese sticks, but don’t peel them into strips—you want them intact.
- Egg roll wrappers: To match those 12 pieces of string cheese, you’ll need 12 large egg roll wrappers. Use any leftovers for other egg roll recipes, like Buffalo chicken egg rolls or Southwestern-style egg rolls.
- Oil: The best oils for frying are those with a smoke point above 375°F. I’d usually recommend avoiding flavored oils, like peanut or avocado oil, but those subtle flavors might taste good in this savory recipe. Other popular oils for deep-frying are canola, sunflower and corn oil.
- Marinara or spaghetti sauce: Your favorite marinara or spaghetti sauce is the perfect match for these crispy, cheesy wonton mozzarella sticks. If you don’t have a go-to, no worries! Choose one of the best jarred pasta sauces you can buy at the store.
Directions
Step 1: Wrap the cheese sticks

Place a piece of string cheese near the bottom corner of one egg roll wrapper. Fold the bottom corner over the cheese and roll it up halfway.

Fold the sides toward the center and over the cheese.

Moisten the remaining corner with water, then roll it up tightly to seal it. Repeat the process with the remaining wrappers and cheese.
Test Kitchen Tip: Keep the remaining wrappers covered with a damp paper towel until you’re ready to use them. This will prevent them from drying out.
Step 2: Heat the oil
In a deep cast-iron or electric skillet, heat 1/2 inch of oil to 375°.
Editor’s Tip: Use a kitchen thermometer to monitor the temperature of the oil. Too-hot oil will burn the wonton wrapper before the mozzarella is heated through, but too-cold oil will soak into the wonton wrapper, turning it soggy. They’re common frying mistakes we don’t want you to make!
Step 3: Fry the wonton mozzarella sticks

Fry the sticks, a few at a time, until they’re golden brown, 30 to 60 seconds per side. Drain the sticks on paper towels, then serve them with marinara sauce.
Editor’s Tip: Don’t overcrowd the pan, or you could cause a dangerous boil-over.

Wonton Mozzarella Stick Variations
- Add sliced pepperoni: For more protein and flavor, roll sliced pepperoni up with the cheese in each roll. The savory flavor is divine.
- Try them with soy sauce: These wonton-wrapped mozzarella sticks are surprisingly tasty when dipped in good soy sauce or sweet chili sauce.
- Give them some heat: Love a little spice? Sprinkle red pepper flakes into each stick to add a bit of spice that enhances the other flavors. Or, buy a jar of spicy arrabbiata pasta sauce for dipping.
How to Store Wonton Mozzarella Sticks
Like all fried foods, wonton mozzarella sticks are best eaten the day they’re made. If you do have leftovers, allow the wonton mozzarella sticks to cool to room temperature, then store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to four days.
How do you reheat wonton mozzarella sticks?
To reheat wonton mozzarella sticks, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and preheat your oven or convection oven to 400°. Bake the wonton mozzarella sticks until they’re warmed through and crispy, about seven minutes.
Wonton Mozzarella Stick Tips

Where can I find egg roll wrappers?
Look for egg roll wrappers in the produce section or in the international food aisle. Be sure to get egg roll wrappers, not spring roll wrappers. Egg roll wrappers are soft and bendable while in the package. Spring roll wrappers are usually thin and stiff, and require a dip in water to soften them.
Why are my wonton mozzarella sticks coming out limp and soggy?
For ultra-crispy fried foods, the key is to make sure the oil is hot enough. If your first mozzarella sticks are soggy, kick your oil temperature up a couple of notches. Use an instant-read or candy thermometer to monitor the temperature and ensure it hovers around 375º.
Could I make these in an air fryer?
Yes, you can make wonton mozzarella sticks in an air fryer. Set the appliance’s temperature to 400º (or the hottest you can if that’s above your air fryer’s maximum heat) and plan to cook them for 8 to 10 minutes.
