Ingredients for Cheesy Sausage Potatoes

  • Potatoes: Yukon Gold or white potatoes are the best type of potatoes for this recipe. Use a potato peeler correctly for easy-breezy peeling.
  • Pork sausage: You’ll need bulk pork sausage for this recipe, and the flavor is up to you. Use breakfast sausage, mild or hot Italian sausage, or even chorizo. If you can find only links, remove the casings and crumble the meat into the pan.
  • Onion: Use a yellow or white onion in this recipe. The best way to cut an onion without crying? Wear goggles!
  • Butter: Drizzle melted butter over the potatoes to add richness and flavor.
  • Cheddar cheese: Cheese you shred yourself has the best flavor and meltability. Any of our picks for the best shredded cheddar cheese work too.

Directions

Step 1: Cook the potatoes

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place the peeled and sliced potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, until tender, 8 to 10 minutes.

Step 2: Cook the sausage

Meanwhile, crumble the sausage into a large skillet and add the chopped onion. Cook over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink; drain if necessary.

Step 3: Build the casserole

Drain the potatoes and arrange in an ungreased 13×9-inch baking dish. Drizzle with melted butter. Add the sausage mixture and stir gently. Sprinkle evenly with shredded cheddar cheese.

Step 4: Bake the casserole

Bake, uncovered, until the cheese melts, five to seven minutes.
