Four Sigmatic Mushroom Protein Coffee

Four Sigmatic Protein Coffee packs protein, creatine, collagen and lion's mane into every cup.

I’ve always wanted to be a morning person. While I’ll never be the type who happily springs out of bed, I’ve learned that I feel my best when I start the day with a workout. The catch? I still need coffee to get there.

Most mornings, I’m rushing out the door with just enough time to make a cup of coffee before heading to the gym. A protein-packed breakfast often happens later. And despite my best intentions, creatine—a supplement that supports muscle performance and recovery—doesn’t always make it into the routine.

That’s why Four Sigmatic’s Protein Coffee stopped me in my tracks. The blend combines coffee, protein, creatine, collagen and lion’s mane mushroom in a single scoop. More impressively, it consolidates several parts of my morning routine into one mug. And as someone who’s always looking for ways to simplify busy mornings and fuel my workouts, I couldn’t wait to try it.

Why I’m Obsessed with Four Sigmatic Protein Coffee

I’ve tested my fair share of mushroom coffee, but Four Sigmatic’s Protein Coffee feels like a different category altogether. According to Four Sigmatic, “Most coffee wakes you up. This one builds you up.” After testing it hot and iced over the course of a week, I’d say that’s a pretty fair description. Each benefits-packed scoop transforms my coffee from a simple habit into something that actively supports my morning.

What impressed me most wasn’t necessarily any one ingredient—it was how effortlessly everything fit into my morning. Instead of making coffee, mixing a protein shake and remembering to take creatine, I could stir one scoop into water and head out the door. As someone who works out first thing in the morning, I liked knowing I wasn’t heading into my workout fueled by coffee alone. Those 10 grams of protein combined with 60 calories (or more if you add milk) gave me just enough substance to bridge the gap until breakfast.

Taste-wise, expect something sweeter than your average cup of joe. Since I typically add plant milk to my coffee anyway, a splash of unsweetened soy milk mellowed out the sweetness and turned it into more of a latte. If you already use flavored coffee creamer or protein powder in your coffee, the sweeter flavor profile probably won’t feel that different.

I was also happy to see that Four Sigmatic uses organic pea protein rather than whey, which aligns with my preference for more plant-based ingredients. However, the collagen comes from grass-fed bovine collagen peptides. Personally, I would have preferred an entirely plant-based formula, but I also don’t typically supplement with collagen. If you already take collagen every day, though, this will come as an added bonus. Having it mixed right into your coffee means one less container, one less scoop and one fewer step in your routine!

Ultimately, that’s why I kept reaching for it. Not because I think everyone needs protein coffee—it’s because it replaces several products I was already using. Plus, it turns my morning mug into something more substantial without adding another step to my routine.

How to Make Mushroom Protein Coffee

I tested Four Sigmatic Protein Coffee both iced and hot. For the iced version, I simply stirred one scoop into cold water, added a few ice cubes and a little unsweetened soy milk, then headed out the door. I found that the drink mixed surprisingly well with cold water, though an occasional stir helped prevent the ingredients from settling at the bottom.

Flavor-wise, I think this is the best case scenario for combining protein, creatine and collagen into your morning cup of joe. Right off the bat, the powder had a pleasant aroma with hints of cinnamon and coconut. I’ll admit I wasn’t sure how I felt about the initial sip, but the flavor quickly grew on me. I ended up enjoying it even more with the addition of plant-based milk, which is how I typically drink my coffee anyway.

For the hot version, I stirred the mix into hot water before giving it a quick whirl with my handheld frother, which helped create a smoother, more evenly blended drink. I found the hot version noticeably sweeter than the iced one. If that’s a little too sweet for your taste, adding your favorite milk helps mellow the flavor and transform it into more of a latte.

What’s in One Scoop

Here’s what you’ll find in one scoop of Four Sigmatic Protein Coffee:

Protein

Each serving contains 10 grams of protein sourced from organic pea protein. While 10 grams of protein isn’t enough to replace a full breakfast or protein shake, it provides a nice nutritional bridge until your next meal. Combined with the coffee, it makes for a more satisfying pre-workout option than coffee alone.

Creatine

The formula also includes 3 grams of creatine monohydrate, a well-researched supplement that supports muscle performance during high-intensity exercise and may also aid recovery and muscle growth when used consistently. While most people (myself included) take creatine separately, Four Sigmatic incorporates it directly into the coffee blend.

Collagen

Four Sigmatic’s protein coffee features grass-fed bovine collagen peptides. Collagen is a protein naturally found in connective tissues throughout the body. While research on collagen is still evolving, many people take collagen to support healthy skin, hair, nails and joints. For anyone who already includes collagen in their daily routine, having it built directly into their morning coffee is a convenient bonus.

Lion’s Mane Mushroom

The blend also contains 500 milligrams of organic lion’s mane mushroom extract per serving, a functional mushroom often associated with focus, memory and cognitive support. While it’s difficult to isolate the effects of any single ingredient in a blend like this, I appreciate that Four Sigmatic uses organic fruiting-body extract rather than relying on mycelium, as is common in some mushroom supplements.

Coffee

Finally, there’s the coffee itself. With 100 milligrams of caffeine per serving, the blend delivers roughly the same amount of caffeine as a standard cup of coffee. For me, it delivered enough energy to power through an early workout and stay energized throughout my work day without a crash or jitters.

Four Sigmatic Protein Coffee

Designed to streamline busy mornings, this coffee blend packs protein and functional ingredients into a single serving.

If you’ve been curious about protein coffee or simply want to streamline your morning routine, Four Sigmatic’s Protein Coffee is available directly from the brand’s website for about $30 per 10-serving bag.
