The cereal box surprise is back with a Toy Story twist.
Growing up, weekend mornings in my house were not a democracy. My two older brothers had control of the remote, which is how I ended up fully committed to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman and other cartoon heroes at a very impressionable age. I didn’t question it—I just grabbed a bowl of my favorite cereal and got on board. But as the youngest, I did have one area of control, and it lived inside the cereal box. My brothers usually let me keep the toy. This was a rare, uncontested win before 9 a.m.
That Saturday morning ritual quietly fell away—my brothers and I grew up, cereal boxes changed, and the tradition of the prized breakfast toy disappeared. Now, though, it’s back for a new generation.
Which cereals will include toys?
Starting April 26, Kellogg’s is bringing toys back to cereal boxes nationwide as part of its collaboration with Toy Story 5. Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Apple Jacks and Corn Pops will feature toys tucked inside selected boxes—something that hasn’t been widely seen in more than a decade.
The rollout goes beyond those four too. Other cereals, including Frosted Mini-Wheats, Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes and Cocoa Loops, will be part of the promotion. Not every box will contain the same type of surprise.
What’s inside the new Toy Story-inspired boxes?
The rollout splits into two lanes. Select boxes will bring back a classic in-box toy—the kind you have to dig around to find—while others feature collectible items tied to Toy Story 5, including character-inspired spoons, trading cards and even movie ticket promotions. It’s a slightly updated version of the original idea, but the appeal hasn’t changed at all!
