The newest Snickers flavor is a major departure from the original candy bar. I tried it before its official release—and promptly ate the entire thing.

I love bananas. I love them even more in desserts. Bananas Foster is my absolute favorite indulgence, banana cream pie is always a yes, and a fresh loaf of banana bread never lasts more than a day in my house. Banana-flavored candy, however, is another story. I’ve never cared for that particular artificial flavor, so when I heard about Snickers’ new flavor, I was initially skeptical.

Still, I wanted to try it. I stopped by Walgreens a few days ahead of the official release on the off chance the new bars had arrived, and luck was on my side: I managed to get an early taste test before they hit shelves.

I bought three—one for each member of my family except me. Both my kids love banana-flavored anything, my husband has a serious weakness for Snickers, and I was quite sure I’d take one bite and hand it over to him.

Turns out, I ate the whole thing. Sorry, honey.

What is the new Snickers flavor?

Banana Nut Bread Snickers sounds like a fairly dramatic departure, but most of the beloved original bar’s character remains intact. It still has the milk chocolate, caramel and peanuts you’d expect from a Snickers; the only real difference is banana-flavored nougat. That means the peanuts already in a Snickers supply the “nut” part of banana nut bread, while the nougat brings in the banana.

The new flavor officially arrives September 18, and you’ll have to go to Walgreens to find it. It’s exclusive to the chain for a limited time.

Given my feelings about banana candy, I expected that first bite to be plenty. Instead, I finished the bar in about a minute.

The banana flavor was much less artificial than I expected. It’s definitely there, but it doesn’t bulldoze the chocolate, caramel and peanuts or turn the whole thing into banana candy. It still tastes like a Snickers, which may be the most important thing it gets right.

I could see the banana bread comparison too. The peanuts make the banana-and-nut combination work, while the caramel adds a little of the sweetness and richness you’d expect from banana bread. I’m not going to pretend I forgot I was eating a candy bar, but the name makes sense.

Would I choose it over a regular Snickers bar every single time? Probably not. But for someone who bought a bar for everyone in the house except herself, eating the first one in a matter of seconds was a fairly decisive review.
