Dirty Dr Pepper and other dirty sodas are definitely having a moment, but I’ve been on the fence. Soda and cream? That sounds like two things that do not go together. Yet, dirty sodas have exploded thanks to social media, soda chains like Swig and shows like The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Since these drinks have been so popular—and the concept in general sounds so weird—curiosity got the best of me and I just had to try one for myself.

I prepped a classic dirty Dr Pepper, which includes coconut syrup, lime and half-and-half cream. It tasted shockingly good but ended up looking like a science fair experiment, since citrus and milk literally do not mix.

So, naturally, I took inspiration from the viral McDonald’s dirty Dr Pepper, skipping the lime and instead adding sweet vanilla syrup and crowning the whole thing with fluffy cold foam. This was my jam. The result tasted as if my favorite vanilla latte collided with a perfectly fizzy Dr Pepper float, resulting in creamy, bubbly nostalgia.

Copycat McDonald’s Dirty Dr Pepper Ingredients

  • Dr Pepper or Diet Dr Pepper: Dr Pepper’s signature blend of 23 flavors gives the drink its unmistakable bold, spiced cherry-cola vibe. This big flavor refuses to be outshined by the vanilla syrup and cold foam. Diet Coke can obviously be substituted, but the creamy vanilla flavor will be the main event, not the cola.
  • Vanilla syrup: This syrup adds sweetness with signature vanilla depth. Buy a brand like Torani or Monin, or see what your local coffee shop uses. You can also make your own simple syrup very easily at home.
  • Half-and-half cream: Half-and-half creates the luxurious cold foam topping that makes this version feel elevated and smooth. It adds richness without becoming overly heavy.
  • Cocktail cherry: A cocktail cherry like a Luxardo cherry adds a playful, nostalgic garnish that leans hard into soda fountain energy. Plus, it just looks cute.

Directions

Step 1: Pour the soda

Fill a tall glass with ice, then pour in the Dr Pepper. (Let the soda settle briefly to preserve as much carbonation as possible before adding the topping.) Then, add the vanilla and gently stir.

Editor’s Tip: Over-stirring the soda will reduce the carbonation, so gentle is the key.

Step 2: Make the cold foam

Pour the half-and-half cream into a small bowl or tightly sealed jar. Whisk, froth or shake vigorously until the cream becomes a cold foam that is light, airy and pourable.

Editor’s Tip: You can add a teaspoon of vanilla syrup to the cream and then froth for another element of vanilla in your dirty soda.

Step 3: Float the foam

Slowly spoon or pour the cold foam over the top of the Dr Pepper.

Step 4: Garnish and serve

Copycat McDonald’s Dirty Dr Pepper Variations

  • Try the classic version: For the most traditional dirty Dr Pepper experience, use regular Dr Pepper, coconut syrup, lime juice, and half-and-half. Because citrus is acidic and the cream is a base, the half-and-half can curdle a bit when mixed with lime. Don’t worry, it still tastes great, but mixing the lime into the soda and keeping the cream on top will keep your drink looking good until entirely mixed as it’s sipped. Or, avoid the whole problem and mix your Dr Pepper with the Coffeemate Dirty Soda creamer, which combines the cream, lime and coconut flavors for you.
  • Make it extra indulgent: Swap in sweet cream or heavy whipping cream for the half-and-half if you want full dessert vibes.
  • Switch up your syrup: Coconut, cherry, caramel or raspberry syrup pairs surprisingly well with Dr Pepper’s complex flavor profile.

How to Store Copycat McDonald’s Dirty Dr Pepper

Dirty Dr Peppers are best enjoyed immediately after making, since carbonation and cold foam are both fleeting pleasures. You can try to mix the vanilla cold foam ahead of time, refrigerate it separately for up to a day and then froth it again before serving, but it’s best fresh and doesn’t even save that much time. Once a dirty soda is fully assembled, this drink is very much a make-it-and-drink-it situation.

Why does dirty Dr Pepper sometimes look curdled or split?

Dirty Dr Pepper can sometimes appear slightly separated when the acidic ingredients like lime interact with dairy. While it may look a little unusual, it is often still safe to drink, though the texture may be less appealing. This McDonald’s-inspired version skips the lime entirely, giving you a smoother, creamier result without the floaties.

Can I make a copycat McDonald’s dirty Dr Pepper without special equipment?

Yes, you absolutely can make dirty Dr Pepper without a frother. Simply shake the cream and vanilla syrup vigorously in a Mason jar with a tight lid until foamy. Bonus: It’s a workout!
