Dimensions
Before you fall in love with a cabinet’s style, make sure it actually fits your space. Measure the width, height and depth of the area you’re working with, and think about how the doors will open and whether you’ll still have room to move around. Depth matters more than people realize—you want shelves that can comfortably hold standard bottles without wasting space. Tunstall also recommends looking for a cabinet with a comfortable height if you plan to make drinks on it.
And if you tend to pick up new bottles often, it’s worth choosing a cabinet with a little extra breathing room so you’re not reorganizing every time you come home with something new. “Traditional bar carts are often designed to display only a handful of bottles and tools, so if you don’t want to store the rest of your collection in a pantry or kitchen cabinet, you’ll need something larger,” says Tunstall.
Materials
Modern bar cabinets come in a mix of woods, metals and glass, and each material brings a different look and level of upkeep. Solid wood feels warm and traditional and often ages nicely, though it may need occasional conditioning. Engineered woods and laminates are more budget friendly and typically easier to maintain. Think about how much use your cabinet will get and choose something that can handle your household’s wear-and-tear reality, not just your style aspirations.
Both Tunstall and Cooper recommend choosing a bar cabinet with an easy-to-clean surface so that you can mix drinks directly on it.
Storage
Good bar cabinets do more than hide bottles; they make your setup easier to use. Look at how the interior is arranged and whether it suits what you actually drink and serve. Some cabinets handle tall bottles better than others, and features like adjustable shelves or dedicated racks for stemware can make a big difference.
“When shopping online for a home bar cabinet, look past the styled photos and check the usable interior dimensions,” says Cooper. “Measure your tallest liquor bottle, widest decanter and stemware before ordering, and prioritize adjustable shelves with a clearly stated weight capacity—spirits and glassware become heavy quickly.”
Tunstall says, “You should also decide what you want to display and what you want to conceal. Open shelving looks awesome if your collection is organized, but closed storage may be more practical if you have pets, a dusty home, or supplies that look a little cluttered.” Drawers help keep small tools from getting lost, and if you have kids or expensive bottles, a locking door isn’t overkill; it’s practical.
Aesthetic
A bar cabinet should feel like it belongs in the room, not like you parked a piece of restaurant furniture in the corner. Consider the finishes and hardware you already have at home and look for something that complements them. If you want the cabinet to double as a showpiece, glass doors, interior lighting or a bold design can give it that “center of attention” effect. If you prefer something more subtle, stick to clean lines and finishes that blend with your existing decor. In either case, choose a cabinet you enjoy looking at, because it’s going to be part of your everyday space, not just your cocktail hours.
But looks aren’t everything. “The biggest mistake is choosing a cabinet based on appearance before considering what you need it to do,” says Tunstall. “Take inventory, measure your items and your available space, and then find the piece of furniture that solves those specific storage needs.” This could mean choosing a different piece of furniture entirely and styling it as a home bar setup.
“My biggest advice when looking for a bar cart or cabinet is to shop for your specific needs,” says Tunstall. “Sometimes you might find something that isn’t traditionally for liquor but fits your space better than anything labeled as a ‘liquor cabinet.'” In fact, he says that for his own home, he chose a corner accent cabinet not marketed as a bar. “It allows me to display a few favorite bottles and my most-used barware while hiding everything else for a cleaner look. And it fits quietly in an unused corner,” he says.
