Homemade Single-Serve Rice Krispies Treats Exist, and I Can’t Believe I Didn’t Know This Sooner
This single-serve Rice Krispies treat skips the pan and delivers a warm, gooey dessert in about a minute.
As a mom of two, a box of Rice Krispies and a bag of marshmallows are almost permanent fixtures in my pantry. At this point, throwing together a pan of Rice Krispies treats is just a normal thing that happens before movie nights, rainy afternoons or backyard barbecues, where we roast them over the fire pit. We rarely even stick to the classic version anymore, always finding new ways to spice them up with different cereals or added ingredients (Fruity Pebbles take the top spot around here).
Sometimes, though, I don’t always want a whole pan of Rice Krispies treats sitting on my counter. And that’s when I realized I could make exactly one Rice Krispies treat in a mug in about a minute. Single-serve desserts for the win!
What are single-serve Rice Krispies treats?
Single-serve desserts have been around for ages. Chocolate mug cakes and microwave cookies and brownie recipes have all earned permanent spots in many kitchens because they satisfy a craving without leaving an entire dessert on the counter. Rice Krispies treats are simply the latest to get the single-serve treatment. Instead of melting marshmallows for a full 13×9-inch pan, this version uses just enough butter, mini marshmallows and Rice Krispies to make one warm, gooey serving in a mug or small bowl.
The idea has been making the rounds on social media, where creators have been sharing recipes that take less than a minute to prepare. Most are meant to be eaten straight from the mug with a spoon while they’re still warm.
How to Make Single-Serve Rice Krispies Treats

To make my own version, I combined 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 cup of mini marshmallows in a large microwave-safe mug. I microwaved the mixture for about 20 seconds, watching it closely as the marshmallows puffed up dramatically, then stirred until smooth before mixing in 1 cup of Rice Krispies cereal.

My biggest piece of advice is to use a mug or bowl that’s larger than you think you’ll need. The marshmallows expand quickly in the microwave, and you’ll want enough room to stir the cereal without making a sticky mess. If the marshmallows aren’t completely melted after 20 seconds, continue to microwave in short bursts, stirring between each one.
Once the cereal is evenly coated, it’s ready to eat.
How do they taste?

The flavor is the same as traditional treats because it’s made with the same ingredients. The real surprise was the experience rather than the taste.
I always thought the best bite of a homemade Rice Krispies treat was the one you sneak before the pan has finished setting. It’s warm, extra gooey and just messy enough that you end up grabbing a spoon instead of trying to cut a perfect square. This version skips straight to the good part.
There’s no waiting for a pan to cool, no sticky baking dish to wash and no temptation to keep wandering back into the kitchen to trim off “just one more” piece.
I’ll still make full batches for movie nights or sharing with neighbors. But for an ordinary weeknight, I love that I can make exactly enough for whoever wants one, whether that’s just me or each of my kids, without the rest of the pan sitting on my counter, making an awfully convincing case for itself.
