Sigourney Weaver has one of those careers that’s almost impossible to summarize cleanly. She’s sci-fi royalty thanks to Alien, comedy royalty thanks to Ghostbusters and somehow also the voice of reason in half the movies I watched growing up. My personal favorite of hers has always been Dave, which remains one of the coziest political movies ever made. A regular guy accidentally becoming president is somehow still less stressful than watching actual cable news, and Sigourney spends the entire film radiating elegant exasperation in silk blouses. It’s perfect.
And now, Sigourney’s heading into a galaxy far, far away with a role in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Sigourney recently stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she shared her favorite sandwich and the very specific reason it’s been attached to one major memory for decades.
What is Sigourney Weaver’s favorite sandwich?
Sigourney says her favorite sandwich is cheddar cheese and tomato on white toast.
During the interview, she explained that the sandwich became permanently tied to the day she auditioned for Alien. Director Ridley Scott had built an entire set for the screen test, and she spent a full day running through scenes before finally heading back to her hotel, completely exhausted and starving. That’s when she ordered the sandwich.
Sigourney told Stephen Colbert it was the most delicious food she’d ever had in her life, which makes perfect sense. The sharpness of the cheese, the gentle crisp of toasted white bread and perfectly juicy tomato is the sort of sandwich that tastes especially good when your nervous system has been through something stressful.
The story somehow gets even more cinematic from there. Sigourney said Ridley Scott didn’t call for three nerve-racking days after the audition. She eventually got the news back in New York while listening to Lena Horne sing “I’ve Got the World on a String” when the phone rang. Scott was calling to tell her she got the part.
Which means one of the most iconic performances in sci-fi history is, at least partially, emotionally linked to a tomato sandwich on white toast.
