Shakshuka Pizza with Za’atar Meatballs

This shakshuka pizza with za'atar meatballs recipe bakes eggs, mozzarella, feta, shakshuka sauce and well-spiced lamb meatballs on a homemade crust.

Ingredients

  • MEATBALLS:
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon za'atar seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 pound ground lamb
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • SHAKSHUKA SAUCE:
  • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley, divided
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided
  • CRUST:
  • 1 package (6-1/2 ounces) pizza crust mix
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric, divided
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • TOPPINGS:
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 500°. In a large bowl, combine first five ingredients. Add lamb; mix lightly but thoroughly. Shape into 1-1/2-in. balls.
  2. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Brown meatballs in batches; drain. Set aside.
  3. In the same skillet; add tomatoes, smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, cayenne, red chili flakes, and salt. Bring to a simmer; cook until liquid has slightly reduced, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in 1/4 cup each chopped parsley and cilantro.
  4. In a large bowl, prepare pizza crust according to package instructions, adding 1 teaspoon of turmeric while mixing. Let rest 5 minutes.
  5. Grease a 12-in. cast-iron skillet with canola oil and set aside. On a lightly floured surface, roll pizza dough into a 12-in. circle. Press into cast iron skillet. Bake for 5 minutes.
  6. In a small bowl, combine butter and remaining 1/2 teaspoon turmeric; brush over crust. Spoon prepared shakshuka sauce over top.
  7. With back of spoon, make 3 wells in sauce; break 1 egg into each well. Sprinkle mozzarella and lamb meatballs over sauce.
  8. Bake until cheese is melted and egg whites have set, 10-12 minutes. Sprinkle with feta cheese, remaining parsley and cilantro, feta and additional za'atar seasoning before serving.
