Seattle dogs are a Pacific Northwest specialty, assembled with a shmear of cream cheese, a pile of caramelized onions and a good story.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons canola oil
- 2 teaspoons butter
- 2 large onions, halved and thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
- 8 hot dogs, butterflied
- 8 hot dog buns, split, toasted
- 6 ounces cream cheese, softened
- Optional: Thinly sliced jalapeno, Sriracha, yellow mustard or sauerkraut
Directions
- Heat oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions; cook 5-6 minutes or until starting to lightly brown. Add sugar, salt and pepper. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cook 15-20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes, until onions are brown and very soft.
- Remove onions from pan. In the same pan, in batches, cook hot dogs until charred on both sides, 3-5 minutes.
- Spread softened cream cheese onto hot dog buns. Top with hot dogs and caramelized onions. Garnish with additional toppings, as desired.
